Ballarat hailstorm event - software in use

Posted 25 October 2011 by Sean Fishlock (Mecc)

Something close to home for me is the recent massive hailstorm event in Ballarat on the 22 October, my home was one of numerous homes flooded as the city was barraged by large hailstones and affected by flash flooding.

The severe storm even affected council facilities, including Town Hall, council offices and Her Majesties Theatre evacuated due to flooding.

Though the incident was also bittersweet due to uncanny timing.

As one of the software foundation partners for MECC Central, my local council, the City of Ballarat is also a participant in the pilot program and on its steering committee, Ballarat is not only one of the first councils to get the rollout of the latest version of the software but the first to test it in a real event.  Although the hailstorm did not trigger activation of council's MECC it kept the SES and emergency services busy, and is being used by council to assist in recovery efforts by tracking people and property cases and managing incident requests.

Like many flooding type events, recovery can go on for some time.  The new features of MECC Central are specifically designed to facilitate this.
